Anti-Epidemic Measures in Armenia and Georgia: A Comparative Analysis

The number of people infected with the coronavirus in Armenia has been growing exponentially in recent days. At the same time, the number of cases of coronavirus infection in the neighboring country, Georgia, is declining. This circumstance has stirred a vigorous debate on social networks and in the media.

Accordingly, the Union of Informed Citizens decided to study the experience of Armenia and Georgia in the fight against coronavirus.

We have discussed in detail the preventive measures taken by the two countries, the well-known case of Echmiadzin in Armenia, comparing it with the case of Marneuli in Georgia. We have compared the restrictions imposed by the two countries during the emergency situation, presented the strategy of lifting the restrictions imposed during the state of emergency. We have also presented the forecasts of reputable international organizations on the economies of Armenia and Georgia.

As a result of the study, we came to the conclusion that poor time management was one of the main reasons for Armenia’s failure in the fight against the spread of coronavirus. The period between the registration of the first case of coronavirus in Armenia and the outbreak of new sources of infection (almost half a month) could be used more efficiently to take measures to prevent the virus.

In addition, the rapid spread of the coronavirus was facilitated by the citizens’ non-compliance with strict quarantine rules, poor police control, operation of the interregional transport, and partial use of the government toolbox.
