The CSTO<\/a> Summit held in Yerevan on October\u00a014 of 2016 adopted a statement<\/a> on behalf of the six member states (Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan) condemning the development of missile defense systems. And though the statement contains neither the USA\u2019s, nor NATO\u2019s names, it is obvious that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the addressee.<\/p>\n

It is Ridiculous<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, it is worth noting that the missile defense system is exclusively a defense system. It is intended<\/a> for neutralization of the enemy\u2019s ballistic missiles in the air, and one can not to kill a single soldier and especially a civilian with such a system.<\/p>\n

Hence, it is, by definition, ridiculous to complain of development of missile defense systems unless you have the intention to hit these states with ballistic missiles. Complaining of those defense systems is basically the same as complaining of production of body armor or gas masks.<\/p>\n

So, if one complains of other\u2019s defense systems, it is perfectly possible to claim that the complainant\u2019s intentions are far from being peaceful.<\/p>\n

And a question arises here\u2026 What actions of the CSTO or Russia force the West and the NATO to take serious defensive measures against Russia?<\/p>\n

Is It Armenia\u2019s Business?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, a counter-argument to this logic may be Russia\u2019s supposed concern that it may be attacked by the NATO and will not be able to retaliate with ballistic missiles. But two questions emerge here\u2026 Why should NATO initiate a missile attack on Russia? And what does Armenia have to do with all of that?<\/p>\n

Armenia has been<\/a> NATO\u2019s partner country since 2005 and carries out a peacekeeping mission together with the NATO. All the power structures in Armenia (including the RA Ministry of Defense<\/a>, the RA Police<\/a>, and etc.) receive financial assistance from the United States.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the RA Armed Forces carry out peacekeeping<\/a> missions in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Lebanon as part of the NATO or its member states.<\/p>\n

Against this backdrop, it is absolutely unclear why Armenia condemns the spread of NATO\u2019s missile defense systems. Moreover, even if there was no cooperation between Armenia and the NATO, Armenia would hardly have an intention to attack NATO with ballistic missiles and, hence, would not have problems with its missile defense systems.<\/p>\n

Anyway, it results that on October 14, Armenia officially opposed the development of systems aimed at the protection of the territory and the population of a number of countries (including partner states).<\/p>\n

We can only hope that Armenia\u2019s partner states (including NATO members) will not take Armenia\u2019s position seriously, understanding that it was adopted due to pressures from the north.<\/p>\n
