Main Dependencies of the Republic of Armenia on the Russian Federation: Threats and Solutions

The complex of unilateral dependencies has always been a determining factor in the relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation.

These dependencies have had both objective and subjective reasons. However, until recent years, as a rule, they were not even considered a challenge or a threat, since Armenia’s domestic and foreign policy was generally deemed to be adapted to Russian interests.

With the joint efforts of the Union of Informed Citizens and the Research Center on Security Policy, the study “Main Dependencies of the Republic of Armenia on the Russian Federation: Threats and Solutions” has been published. It is dedicated to assessing Armenia’s dependencies on Russia and ways to manage and neutralize the risks arising from these dependencies.

The paper “Main Dependencies of the Republic of Armenia on the Russian Federation” presents economic, food, infrastructure, and energy dependencies, discusses information, physical, military and political, terrorism, and demographic threats, and provides relevant recommendations.

“The existing multilayered system of dependencies and threats may create the impression of a desperate state. However, the successes achieved by Armenia in recent years, especially in reducing dependencies in the field of procuring weapons from Russia, eliminating the temporary Russian presence at border and passport control points, and diversifying foreign policy, prove that with a combination of political will, capacities, and knowledge, it is possible to overcome instruments of deterrence/dependence formed over decades,” the authors of the study, Areg Kochinyan, President of the Research Center on Security Policy, and Robert Ghevondyan, an expert from the same center, note.
